Friday Feast
I love me a hot dog. And in my humble opinion, Chicago's are THE best! I have waged many a verbal war over this. From Heid's in Syracuse to street dogs in New York, Chicago does rule!
This past week in Grand Rapids, East Town to be exact, I was treated, or rather I treated everyone, to what seems to be a Grand Rapids legend and staple, hot dogs from Yesterdog!
Yeah, it was midnight or so, yeah we had a little drink on. But what a treat! I really like that on their basic yesterdog, they put chili on their dogs. On the negative side, they also put ketchup?! What? Yeah ketchup on a hot dog!
A few less points for the ketchup but bonus points for the chili and Yesterdog gets a thumbs up from me!

From Wikipedia:
A Chicago-style hot dog is a steamed or boiled all-beef hot dog on a poppy seed bun, which originated in the U.S. city of Chicago, Illinois. The hot dog is topped with mustard, onion, sweet pickle relish (usually neon green), a dill pickle spear, tomato slices or wedges, sport peppers, and a dash of celery salt; but never ketchup. The complete assembly is sometimes called "dragged through the garden" because of the unique combination of condiments. It is taboo to put ketchup on a Chicago hot dog; some hot dog stands don't even stock the condiment.
From Lisapedia:
A Heids-style hot dog is a fried all-pork&beef hot dog on a new england style bun, which originated God knows where but is sold in Liverpool NY. The hot dog is fried on the same grill that has been used for 100 years and never washed which gives the hot dog it's amazing flavor. The hot dog is topped with whatever any one feels like putting on the thing. Chili, cheese, mustard, sweet pickle relish and ketchup, yes even ketchup. The conndiments come in cute little paper condiment cups. The complete assembly is sometimes called "best hotdog this side of Liverpool or heck, even Syracuse" because of the amazing combination of grease, meat and condiments, including, yes including, ketchup. In some parts of the country it is still considered taboo to put ketchup on a hot dog, but in the progressive little suburban town of Liverpool, NY it is embraced.
One could say a Chicago dog is healthy: oure beef, boiled or steamed, topped with all sorts of veggies!
That dog from Heids is FRIED? And we wonder about the fattening of America. FRIED? made with pork (more fat please!), on made on a grill that has not been cleaned in over 100 years, can you say health code violations! As tasty as they may be and are, they are much better without ketchup!
