Furry Babies

Furry Babies is a really nice turn on your typical pet store, conceptually. There are no cages as you can see. All the puppies are kept in rather sizable and open cribs that line the walls of the "nursery" styled store. Even the help are dressed in nursing uniforms. You won't find bags of pet food and chew toys here as much as high-end clothing, strollers and all sorts of accessories for your furry baby.

This is their only store right now, located in the Peru Mall, in Peru, IL. They are hoping to franchise. With the way many people treat their pets, this could be a big hit!

TO ALL OF YOU IDIOTS, FIRST OF ALL, THE PUPPIES COME WITH A YEAR WARRANTY, A YEAR! GET IT

^^^did you seriosuly just say that?!
saying that the dogs come with a warranty?
like a vacuum or microwave.
i'm glad to see that all you care about is making sure you get your money back.
so you will send your dog back when it's sick because you have a warranty on it.
and what do you think they're going to do with that sick dog once you send it back?
i'm pretty sure they're not going to take care of it, nurse it back to health.
pet shops should be shut down; there are plenty of deserving animals sitting in shelters because people like you decide they want a purebred puppy from some puppy mill.
come on people, let's be humane.

and ps,
you think furry babies is seriously a good idea?
the dogs are tiny,
so small that they fit through the bars of the cribs.
i've seen it happen, more than once.
it would be so easy for a little kid who doesn't know any better to slip a puppy some food that most likely will make it sick.
they say they have staff members at every crib, making sure that stuff doesn't happen.
but they don't.
they don't watch everyone, they don't have enough people in there working at one time to do so.
it wouldn't surprise me if that has already happened.
it's not like they would be advertising it.
so who knows what really happens.

Glad to see the passion from all you posters. I am equally passionate about the issue as well. I have always got my pets, both dogs and cats, as well as my family from shelters and breeders and would not buy a pet from a pet store with so many great animals waiting for rescue.

That sais, if you read my frist senatnce of the post I say "Furry Babies is a really nice turn on your typical pet store, conceptually." CONCEPTUALLY.

I am a graphic designer focusing where much of my work is in the branding realm. I was simply commenting on someone taking an old model of a business, regardless if it is good or bad, and doing something different with it. Much like what Saturn did when they came on the market. Or how Target has changed and made the public aware of BRANDS.

I have been at the store more than once and have heard the sales folks clumsily answer where the animals have come from and their pricing! NEVER have I spent so much money on even a purebred AKC registered pet. Even my beloved Golden Retriever only cost $800 and she had champion lineage in her!

Thank you Katie for having the courage to actually post your name! As for all you anonymous folks, I hope you are all as passionate and vigilent in your belief and support your local shelters.

Just when we think we're making headway against Petlant, this place pops up. Anonymous, you should check your sources. No, not everyone wants to own a mixed breed, but they don't have to go to a pet shop and support puppy mills just to get a purebred dog or puppy..There are plenty in shelters and with breed rescue groups. Or God forbid, you take some time to investigate the breed you're interested in and do some homework to find a quality breeder. The fact is, it doesn't matter how clean a USDA commercial "breeders" facility is. They still produce an over abundance of unnecessary puppies, just to feed the impulse buying publics need to cuddle a little puppy. Then, for what ever reason, the majority of them end up in shelters until they are euthanized. So Anonymous, I don't know who you are, if you work for Furry Babies or are related to someone who runs one. Maybe you should take some time and volunteer at a shelter for a few hours a week, better yet, a kill shelter. Then you can see how unwillingly these poor creatures react when the are "put to sleep".

I was at the Springhill Mall in West Dundee, and heard dogs barking. Imagine my horror at seeing all kinds of puppies in baby cribs. People milling about, touching all the dogs, even 2 baby Rottweilers! I can not believe this--Shouldn't this be illegal?

First of all everyone knows a husky is a large breed of dog and sheds... Maybe you should have researched a breed on the internet before buying blindly. What a cruel person you are! To return a puppy after having it for a while How stressfull for the puppy! What do you think Furry Babies is..
a library??
Also, you signed a contract thats states all the facts for a NO CREDIT CHECK agreement. What do you think the interest would be??
If you pay it off early the company will send you a refund check.
Last of all I know for a fact that Furry Babies only has had one husky. I know who bought it and it wasnt you. These people are my friends and they love the dog. Couldnt be happier. So where did you really buy the dog from?

1- Good breeders do not breed "designer mixed breed dogs.
2- just because the breeders are licensed by the USDA doesnt make them reputable.Pretty much every puppy mill is licensed by the USDA.
3- good breeders would NOT sell to a puppy store. Good breeders want to know the families that are giving their puppies a home.A good breeder will interview you to be sure you will be a good owner.
And what the h*** is with the credit to everyone program???Making payments on a puppy??This is a living being not a car.

At 6:06 PM, Blogger djenke said...

now see that right there PROVES that they dont care about the pups...selling to someone who has an income of $1000 a month is crazy...if the puppy were to get sick or injured the vet bills alone could be in the thousands...then when you cant afford to treat the puppy,he or she will end up in a shelter.Geez these people amaze me.

I will post my name: it is Rosemary Borzym, and I am not afraid to say that ANY breeder who allows their puppies to be sold in a pet store is a PUPPY MILL BREEDER. The point is to MAKE MONEY. As a previous poster stated, NO reputable breeder will allow their "children" to be sold to just anyone. As cute as those puppies in those cribs look, you are not seeing the conditions of the mother, forced to produce litter after litter. Once she is no longer to produce "Furry Babies", she is killed. If you don't want a mutt from a pound, you need to spend time attending dog shows or doing some research about who the reputable breeders are. You won't get your dog instantly "on demand," but you will know that your pure-breed is coming from a breeder who truly cares about the well-being of the breed as well the parent dogs. Furthermore, a truly reputable breeder will TAKE THEIR DOGS BACK if it doesn't work out. Try brining a "Furry Baby" back in a year and tell them you are getting divorced, lost your home, etc., and see what they say!

One of these damn stores popped up here in Rockford, IL at Cherry Vale Mall. It's just another store like Petland and they even price their Beagles for the same price, which is $1200.00. I got my Beagle 10 years ago with papers (His mom was a show dog) for $150.00. All I have to say is it doesn't matter if the puppies come from a "USDA" breeder because that's what Petland says and they have puppy mill puppies. This company needs to be shut down.
Also they lady that worked there told me that they weigh the puppies everyday, yeah right, probably to ship them off somewhere to be euthenized if they get too big.

Last winter, my mom finally decided to get a puppy...a Bichon Frise. Purchasing from a pet store was NOT an option. Instead my mom spent WEEKS online researching breeders all over the state. In March, she finally found one. We got a purebred Bichon that was AKC registerable (he has since been registered)with papers for $400. I have three rabbits that were also bought from a private breeder. I cannot fathom why people buy animals from pet stores. It may not be easy to find a breeder, but extremely careful research and regular contact through the internet proved sucessful to us.

At 12:19 AM, Blogger Elmo96 said...

Also, anyone who will sell a dog (or any animal) to someone who may or may not be able to take care of it is just wrong. Surely, if I was to buy a $2,000 dog I'd be too worried about making monthly payments (absurd!) that I'd be reluctant to buy it quality food or take it to the vet if it gets sick. Furry Babies provides the first shots, and the first rotation of flea and hearworm medication? So do most private breeders! That stuff is expensive...do people realize it doesn't last forever?

By purchasing from a pet store, a person is not only condemning the parents of the puppy to a life of misery and continuous breeding, but they are also condemning many shelter dogs to death as well. Every year in the US, 2-3 million (a very low estimate from the Humane Society of the United States) innocent, healthy dogs and cats are euthanized because there are not enough homes for them. HSUS estimates that 25-30% of all dogs in shelters are pure bred. There is a breed rescue for every AKC recognized breed, and many shelters will work with a potential adopter. Just because you want a pure bred dog, you do not have to go to a breeder. www.petfinder.com is a wonderful resource for finding purebred animals of all ages. I like purebred dogs just as much as any dog lover. However, I have always had mixed breeds. My dogs are just as beautiful and adorable as any purebred dog. The myth that "you don't know what you're getting" with a shelter dog is not entirely true. I have trained all but one of my dogs, and another is in the process of training. They have been wonderful. Just because they are mixed breed does not make them any less of a companion or any less intelligent than a purebred. Most dog enthusiasts will tell you that "mutts" are more intelligent than purebreeds. In addition to that, due to a reduced amount of inbreeding and linebreeding, a mutt will most likely have fewer genetic health problems.

At 4:07 PM, Blogger Erin said...

Pet stores, just by their nature, encourage impulse buying. While some customers may have done their research before entering the pet store, the vast majority have not. Direct links have been shown to exist between pet stores and puppy mills/backyard breeders. I am not against breeding, if it is done responsibly. A good breeder will not automatically pump out puppies every heat cycle. He/she should have a waiting list. USDA inspected and AKC registered are useless terms, because the proper standards are not enforced in either case. A good breeder will meet with each prospective owner before selling the puppy, and he/she will not hide behind a pet store. If the breeder truly cares about the animal, he/she will care about what type of home it is going to.

To the comment about the "Mutt from the pound," mutts make some of the best companions. I have had two rescue dogs, and I have found that my dogs seem to remember how bad their lives used to be and they seem to appreciate what I have done for them. They are incredibly loyal and protective.

At 4:15 PM, Blogger Erin said...

Remember if you enter the pet store:

If the staff cannot give you the name of the breeder before you buy the puppy...

If the pet store sells "designer breeds"...

If the dogs are on wire floors...

If there are more than two breeds of dog present...

If the staff cannot tell you about the parents of the dogs beyond general terms...

If the staff will not give you the name of the veterinarian that they claim to use or if they do not even claim to use a veterinarian...

If the staff allows just anyone to handle the dogs whether or not they are truly interested, or regardless of age...

If the pet store allows you to make your "purchase" in less than an hour and take the puppy home that same day...

If there is financing available...

It is most likely not a good place to get a puppy. These are just some of the considerations to make. There are good breeders available, but it requires research. A good breeder will only specialize in one breed (perhaps two at the most), and they will strive to know everything possible about that breed from congenital diseases to life span to proper genetic lines. Most legitimate breeders will also show their dogs in order to prove by way of a knowledgeable expert judge that their dogs are superior. Adopting a puppy is an important step that requires research, because a puppy is for life not just until it is no longer "cute".

At 4:26 PM, Blogger Erin said...

One of the primary problems with puppy mill puppies and their parents is that they have never been socialized. Judging by the comments, this is a recurring problem with Furry Baby puppies. Just because the puppies are "petted" and "played with" at the pet store, the puppies parents are most often severely neglected. Personality is a genetic trait in dogs as well as humans. Children have been shown to act like parents that they have never known. Dogs are the same way. Nipping and improper urination/defication are signs of unsocialization. An unsocialized dog has no idea how to act around humans. The only time that that dog has had contact with a human is during the sporadic, brief feeding and the times when it is placed with a dog to breed. That dog does not understand that not all humans are cruel; it does not know what it is like to feel a nice soft blanket or bed; it does not know what it is like to play with a ball or a toy; it does not know what it is like to snuggle up to a person and feel love. Is it any wonder that that dog's puppies would have behaviorial problems? That is just part of the unsocialization problem with puppy mills/pet stores.

There is the genetic problem as well. Puppy mills are run by people who have no idea how to properly breed these dogs so that the breeds can remain pure and disease free. Knowing how to properly use genetics in order to produce champion dogs is a learned technique gained by years of study. It is not just saying, I have a male Poodle, and you have a female poodle. Let's put them together. A good breeder will question, does my male poodle have any diseases in his line that could be brought out in the puppies by your female, and vice versa. There are many genetic questions that a good breeder will ask.

Please think about adopting before you buy. There are many dogs that just need a second chance. The shelters are full of wonderful dogs. A shelter is not a jail for a bad dog. Rather, it is often a place of refuge for a dog whose owner can no longer care for it, either for a legitimate reason or because the owner did not think before getting that cute little puppy.

I am simply asking you be outraged but not to post it on this blog that I use as a teaching tool for my students where I share things of influence and elements of design.

Why else are the parents condemned to a life imprisoned in a wire cage, never to be walked or held or loved, never to play in grass or run through the woods? Do you seriously think you are helping dogs because you "rescued" a puppy mill puppy while ignoring the fact that 40,000 dogs and cats are killed EACH WEEK in shelters across the US because there aren't enough homes? I guess if it relieves your guilt....too bad you can't see the poor mother of that puppy you bought. Shame on you.

There are so many inconsistencies with the email from "anonymous" (gee...I wonder why they won't sign their name...perhaps it is a Furry Babies manager in disguise?)The writer missed the point..it is the PARENTS of the puppy mill dogs that suffer. Second, how does a puppy maul a 10 year old boy? Sounds like it wasn't a puppy. Why would any responsible adult allow a child to play with a new dog? Was the dog socialized? How well did this person know the dog? The dog is in a new environment, new people, new schedule, etc. I love my kids. I would NEVER allow them to play with any large "puppy" that I didn't know very well. Sounds like granny was neglectful. The fact that the dog may have been part pit-bull means nothing. Labs can bite. Golden retrievers can bite. Shepherds can bite. any dog trainer or veterinarian will tell you that it is not the fact that a dog is a pit bull that makes them "statistically" more likely to do serious damage...it is the fact that gang-bangers are ruining the breed through irresponsible breeding and training for aggression. In a few years, once pit bulls have been banned, gang-bangers will simply turn to a larger, more powerful breed (such as the Presa Canario)

At 1:44 PM, Blogger Erin said...

I agree with R. Borzym. The breed of a dog does not determine its likelihood to bite. Did you know that the original and subsequent Lassies were recorded to have bitten their owners many many times, but that the pit bull that played in Little Rascals never bit his owner or any of the children or the other actors. Of all of my dogs, my Golden Retriever/Australian Shepherd was my most aggressive, but only in situations where a person or a dog he did not like (especially men) approached him or me too quickly. My chow/rottweiler only shows aggression if an unfamiliar person approaches her or me too quickly. My pitt bull/German Shepherd/husky is just happy to live life. She does not understand the concept of "stranger," and whenever she meets someone new her entire body wriggles.

Aggression is not a "breed" thing. If you determine by aggression by nipping and biting, most of the toy dogs especially chihuahuas would fail and be determined "aggressive, dangerous dogs." Aggression is most often a learned trait that the dog uses to protect itself, such as against children who were not taught to respect the dog's space and against people who mistreat it.

I've been to the West Dundee store in Springhill Mall, talked with a woman that worked there and asked her one simple question..."Who takes care of the puppies when the store is closed?" Her response..."They stay here by themselves just like if they were at your house and you went to work for the day." I did some research and figured out that the mall is closed anywhere from 13 - 16 hours at night...my dog is NEVER alone for 13 - 16 hours a day! That is ridiculous!
Please, Please, Please People do not 'buy' pets! Petfinder.com is a wonderful website where you can research breeds, shelters, and rescue groups and all you'll pay to adopting them is for their vet care they received.

I just want to say Furry Babies Inc is a good place. Every single employee cares about the health and wellness of those puppies and wants them all to go to great homes. I personally love animals myself and is against any animal cruelty, these puppies are born why cant they go home with good people!?? I know for a fact that they can refuse any customer they want if they dont think there capable of taking care of a puppy. I am all for shelters too! To each there own. If they fall in love with a certain puppy and make that connection who cares where they get it. (besides a mill). Furry Babies Inc gets there puupies from USDA Private Licensed Breeders all around the Midwest and if any were under "Investigation" like some of you are saying...dont you think it would be a bigger issue or even shut down? I think you all are upset because you can afford one. The package that comes with all the dogs is ALOT! Spay or neuter is just one of the things covered in the price. Maybe if people did more of that, less pups will be born and "milled as you say"...and they wont have to find more good homes for these little guys to go too! And for the record if you buy a $600.00 dollar dog in the paper from a Breeder aka Backyard Breeder and get the 1st yr vet care it equals out to there prices. The place is immaculate compared to all of the other pet stores Ive seen. And yeah. Um they don't kill the puppies that is absurd! I actually know a lot of people that like older dogs, and im sure they get them there :) Bye.

At 7:51 PM, Anonymous Rosemary Borzym said...

Uh, Sweetpea, you are missing the point. Being USDA licensed means that the animals have food and shelter and crowded, wire cages are acceptable shelter according to USDA guidelines. ALL stores that sell puppies and kittens for profit are puppy mills...ALL of them. Of course they put on a good front where the puppies are sold! Of course they keep the store clean! Who cares about the parent animals? As long as they can keep cranking out as many puppies/kittens as possible, they are kept alive according to "USDA standards," until they are no longer able to produce, and then they are killed to make way for more adults who are then imprisoned their entire lives to satisfy a market that continues to thrive because people continue to fork over the money.

At 11:34 PM, Blogger Unknown said...

I Understand what you are saying I really do and the thought of the adult dogs the dam and sire being so wore down makes me feel sick but why would the USDA allow that then? It just doesn't make sense. If they thought it was animal cruelty wouldn't all these breeders who were under investigation in 2004-2007 be shut down or fined? But they weren't. I mean if they saw a dog that was nothing but skin and bones you don't think they would consider that animal cruelty? Im not stating im asking cause I really dont know.

At 5:52 PM, Anonymous Rosemary Borzym said...

Sweetpea
It has more with one's philosophy of pet animals vs. agricultural animals. The USDA sees to it that livestock animals (pigs, cows, chickens....and puppy-mill raised cats and dogs) have food, water, shelter, and basic veterinary care. That is all. So there are no laws being broken unless the animals are starving. In those cases that particular mill would be shut down. But think of why we choose dogs and cats for pets...they have been domesticated to the point where they yearn to be a part of a family, not just throw into a cage to reproduce, the same way we get our beef, pork, and dairy products. If we are going to live in a world with double-standards for different animals, I wish people would just understand that this is how those cute little puppies and kitten at Furry Babies and Petland are raised (legally.)

You make a fair point. But if this blog is for a design standpoint, very, VERY few of these posts actually deal with the design of the store (including your own posts about animal cruelty to parents, USDA standards and puppy mills). So, if this is a blog for the concept of the stores design, you are responsible for letting it get off course by adding comments that don't pertain to the stores design and concept, as well as not deleting comments that don't pertain to your topic.

From a design standpoint:

Many pet owners feel as if their dog is truely a part of their family. Putting a dog in a crib and treating it like a baby are concepts that people often joke about doing. This store actually does it, and allows a connection between a customer and the company, telling them "look! I love dogs like they're a part of my family too!" It establishes a personal and emotional connection, and therefore, potential business.

Puppies are in cribs, which are lined with plexiglass liners (to prevent small dogs from getting out, and to prevent children from putting their hands inside). These liners are cleaned and sanitized daily. Open top cribs provide socialization for the dogs (customers have, in the past, been able to reach into cribs and play lightly with dogs), as well as to circulate air properly to the dogs. Compared to cage banks and plexiglass cubbies, this idea offers a literal breath of fresh air.

In addition to the air ciculation and protection, cribs are in place to emulate the needs of an infant. This is why the store is called furry babies. Many people do not overlook and/or forget the time and effort that goes into a puppy, and that they really are babies. Placing puppies in cribs creates an analogy for customers to better understand the needs that a potential buyer should provide to a puppy.

Thirdly, employees wear scrubs in a blue and pink walled store. This, along with the cribs, is to emulate a nursery setting to continue along with the theme that puppies are babies.

These things should be what this blog is about, according to your original post.

Also, if this is not an offical blog for furry babies, you probably shouldn't have given this blog the title, "Furry Babies."

I'm sorry if that sounds rude, but the initial post you left was drowned out very quickly by opinionated animal lovers. When I came onto this website, the LAST thing I read was your original post, because I figured it MUST have been about how horrible this store is, due to the overwhelming about of comments that all say that exact thing.

Only when you posted your most recent comment and deleted my previous one, did I actually take the time to read your initial post, and second post. Again, the "concept of design" has nothing to do with the rest of the comments you have chosen to leave shown.

If this is about design, your second post was 25% about the design (or stating that design is what you would like to be discussing) then continued the remaing 75% to be about your opinion of pro-adoption. This blog has nothing to do with the inital intent.

Maragret: this is my PERSONAL blog. In my second post, I did reiterate what the original post was and as many were so passionately speaking about puppy mills and the like I felt I could also post my views.

Again, this is MY personal blog. I post and speak to what I chose. if people want to have a dialogue here about puppy mills, I welcome it. I am not sure who will see it but my hope is a dialogue can move away from here, and those people can find other outlets to help end puppy mills and NOT support places that sell from mills.

But in the end, the original post I made here was for the benefit of my students to look at something they have seen hundreds of times in a new way. CONCEPTUALLY i still think Furry babies is an interesting spin on the run of the mill pet shop.

What if a shelter, that rescues animals had cribs instead of cages. or free roaming mutts.

Just looking at something different.

My name is Kristen and I work at Furry Babies in Fox Valley Mall in Aurora, IL. I know how we work and personally I think that those of you who criticize what it is that we do you are just ignorant. You all talk about doing research on breeders, well then do the same on pet stores. Furry Babies DOES NOT sell puppies from puppy mills. All of our dogs come from Licensed Private USDA Breeders within the Midwest. Our president goes and hand picks them, he has over 300,000 miles on his car from going and picking these puppies up personally. We have all of the puppy's papers. Also before we even sell our puppies they are checked by the vets at Countryside Veterinary Clinic in Yorkville, IL. If the dogs are in anyway unhealthy we do not sell them!!!!! We are constantly sanitizing the cribs every night and right after they go to the bathroom whether it be number 1 or number 2. We do not cross contaminate puppies, the only puppies that they interact with are the ones from the crib that they stay in, unless they are in a crib alone and have no room for a crib mate. We are required to sanitize in between touching puppies and customers are required to do the same.We do not allow customers to reach into the cribs WHATSOEVER!!!!! If they want to see a puppy the first have to be 18 or older to hold a puppy and EVERY CUSTOMER must sanitize their hands before touching the puppies. As for euthanizing the puppies, we DO NOT euthanize them. The puppies are kept in the store UNTIL THEY ARE SOLD!!! All of the employees love these dogs and treat them as if they were our own, in fact some of us have puppies of our own from Furry Babies. We are not and do not support puppy mills. We do have the authority to deny any customer that we feel will not give this dog a good home and we can and have repossessed dogs before because they were being kept in unacceptable and unsafe conditions. So next time you want to criticize Furry Babies and choose to be ignorant and judge a book by its cover, how about you try doing research much like you all claim to do about breeders. And if anyone has any questions about Furry Babies Inc. I'd be more than happy to answer them and set the record straight!!! =]

USDA breeders ARE puppy mills. Google Kathy Bauck. She was a USDA breeder convicted of animal cruelty and torture and her penalty was getting her USDA license "suspended" for 2 years. She still sells on the internet and will be back in business in no time. BTW, she shipped to Furry Babies. See 3/09 dates. http://animalfolksmn.org/kathy-bauck-pet-store-sales.html

You employees who get defensive need to get educated. Shame on you!

Hey Karen, USDA breeders ARE PUPPY MILLS. Check out the NOTES on the facebook page, NO FURRY BABIES. These are USDA reports! DISGUSTING! These pups are classified as livestock by the USDA and the standards are so low they are unacceptable. There are 70 inspectors and over 10,000 puppy mills so even when the write these places up, no one enforces a fix. I got a breeders name from Petland, Linda Bean, and looked up her USDA report. She was written up for stacking dead animals and animal parts by the kennels, in her freezer and in her fridge. SHE is still open for business.
As for those of you who think it's OK to abuse animals like this and to commit consumer fraud, may you all come back as breeding bitches in a puppy mill cage covered in your own feces and urine. You better hope there's someone out here, unlike yourselves, that are willing to fight for you!
